Day 03 (Spatial Encoding)
Day 04 (Pulse Sequences)
This course offers ultimate flexibility allowing participants to select which days they wish to attend. Each day has a theme, and you may mix and match the content you would like to see by choosing the relevant days using the application form below.
Please note that there is a sliding discount scale, if you apply for more than one day. The full course offers a saving of $300!
The MRI in Practice Course has been presented in the USA since 2000.
From 2021 our USA courses will be offered online.
The Course
The course is presented by MRI in Practice authors Catherine Westbrook and John Talbot. Cathy and John are both qualified educators holding Masters degrees in MRI and are both Doctors of (medical) education. They have specialised in distance-learning via webinar for the last 15 years, having taught a Masters degree in MRI via distance-learning delivery. As such, they are ideally placed to offer the very highest quality educational experience in magnetic resonance imaging, both live and on-line.
Since its first publication in 1992 our book MRI in Practice has been the recommended reading for anyone taking boards exams. This course is based on the book and will help you to grasp all of these important topics with ease. The new 5th edition has been completely redesigned to follow the course topics and combined with the high definition CGI graphics used in the course it will provide you with the best possible grounding for your registry examinations.
The Content
The content is primarily aimed at technologists who are taking boards exams, however we also welcome veterinary practitioners, radiotherapy practitioners, physicians, radiologists, cardiologists and neurologists. The course features the same lecture-format as is presented in all of our other host countries and is therefore applicable to a multidisciplinary audience.
The online course format is exactly the same as the live course with streaming lectures each day and live Q&A and revision sessions. Each day is themed and participants may choose which days they wish to participate in, there are generous discounts applied for attending more than one day. The themes for each day are:
• Day 01 - Fundamental Principles (recommended)
• Day 02 - Image Quality
• Day 03 - Spatial Encoding
• Day 04 - Pulse Sequences
Please note, for anyone relatively new to MRI, day 01 is absolutely essential viewing. Without a good grasp of the fundamental concepts covered on Day 01, it is unlikely that any of the other content will be fully understandable. The full programme is shown below and a detailed breakdown of the lecture topics can be found on the course information page.
The Format
The online course uses a blend of HD streaming video and live webinar sessions.
After application we will send you a link that allows you to enrol on our members-only site www.mri-in-practice.com. When you have registered with that site, you will be able to access a course information page that explains how the course works and also allows you to test out your computer hardware to make sure you can access our streaming content. It is very important to do this as soon as possible before the course begins. All of the streaming content is delivered synchronously - just like a live course - but with the added bonus of extra time built into the programme that will allow you to revisit, re-watch and revise any parts of the lectures that you wish to see again. This is a major advantage that can only be realised using online delivery and our participants really love it. The face-to-face sessions are delivered via Zoom webinar. We will send you all the necessary links shortly before the course begins.
If you are interested in how the course was developed from an educational perspective, there is a blog post here.
Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology Professionals
The proliferation of new hybrid MRI/Linac machines has resulted in a big influx of radiotherapy professionals to our courses. We are the preferred education provider for both Elekta and Philips Medical Systems who make these machines, so be reassured you are choosing the right course with MRI in Practice Online!
Veterinary Practitioners
We have been running the course for veterinary radiologists and radiographers in the USA for the last 3 years. MRI in Practice Online features exactly the same course content that we deliver in our exclusive veterinary courses - so please feel free to apply.
Availability
Please note that due to technological restrictions the online course is only available to people who are physically located in North America and Canada, so please do not apply if you will be in any other geographical location when the course is presented. This is due to time-zone synchronisation with mri-in-practice.com. Our website automatically serves the content at the programme times according to where where you are located.

1.1 The Course Organisers
The live MRI in Practice course is presented internationally in 22 countries and on-line. The presenters are Dr. Catherine Westbrook and Dr. John Talbot (hereafter identified as the presenters).
In most cases the presenters are contracted to deliver the course by a local course organiser who administers the course, takes payments from delegates and is usually registered for VAT etc. In some cases the organiser may be a registered company involved in health, education or both.
All requests for information relating to the administration of the courses including payments, refunds etc should be directed to the relevant course organiser. This can be done by using the on-line info request forms relating to each course. These may be on third-party websites.
Courses held in the UK, the USA, Australia and the Netherlands are organised directly by www.mrieducation.com and all enquiries should be directed to info@mri-in-practice.com.
1.2 Course Content
The course materials are updated constantly, to keep pace with changes within the field of MRI and to take advantage of the latest presentation technology and as such the course content may vary over time. The programme provided on this web site and in our promotional materials is for guidance only and we reserve the right to alter the timing and running order of the lectures to meet the requirements of the individual organiser and the venue.
1.3 Intellectual Property and Copyright Issues
The names MRI in Practice, and MRI in Practice / The Course are copyright 1992-present date Blackwell Science (Wiley Books) & Dr. Catherine Westbrook.
All text and graphics in this web site and in the course materials are copyright (2009-present date) Blackwell Science (Wiley Books) and Dr. John Talbot.
1.4 Audio and video recording of the live course content is strictly prohibited including (but not limited to) the use of mobile phones, iPods, iPads, tablet PCs, voice recorders, digital cameras and any type of computer. The presenters reserve the right to ask individual delegates to leave the lecture room in the event of them using any type of mobile electronic equipment including laptops. Lectures will not commence if there are any electronic devices in evidence at the beginning of each session. Mobile phones may be brought into the conference room, but must be switched off and stowed out of site during lectures. Charging of any devices in the lecture hall is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
We operate regular checks with an electronic detection system to ensure that covert recording devices are not being used. This uses optical and radiofrequency scanning.
The presenters will pause presentations in the event that any portable electronic device appears to be in use during a presentation. We have had to introduce these rules following attempts to make illegal video copies of the course materials and they are strictly enforced.
1.5 On-line course protection against copyright theft
The online course uses geo-info software and digital fingerprinting that can be detected in the event that a video is recorded by any means. This content may be used as evidence to explicitly identify the person who captured the recording by date time and location. If such content gets into the public domain we always take legal action against the person responsible. Please do not attempt to record or share on-line content. Offenders will be prosecuted.
This includes screening the lectures to any third party. The on-line lectures are for individual rental as part of the course fee. Public screening, or screening in an institution such as a school, hospital or university IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE. In such cases legal action will be taken against the institution in question and they will be banned from accessing any further courses.
1.5 Visa Applications for International Courses
www.mrieducation.com are unable to provide letters of invitation for visa applicants. This is because we are based in the UK and are therefore not in a position to sponsor or support visa applications in countries other than the UK.
2.1 Course Pricing
Course pricing may vary by country and by venue and is set by the individual organisers (as defined in section 1.1). This will reflect the venue cost, the level of sponsorship and transport costs.
MRI in Practice (The Book) may be offered inclusive of the course fee in certain venues. Please check with the course organiser at the time of application. The course fee NEVER includes accommodation or travel.
2.2 Payments
For your peace of mind, all payments processed directly from www.mrieducation.com are arranged through Stripe. Stripe provide a secure, fraud-protected, banking infrastructure for on-line payments. Stripe payments may not be available from your international location. We currently do not accept payment via any other method. If you are being sponsored by your employer you will need to claim back your payment directly from them.
2.3 Refunds
There are no refunds offered under any circumstances for any of our courses that use Stripe payment options.
DO NOT APPLY OR PAY FOR ONLINE COURSES UNLESS YOUR HOME ADDRESS IS IN THE COUNTRY FOR WHICH THE COURSE IS INTENDED. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE MATERIALS AND YOU WILL NOT BE REIMBURSED.
For all other courses, please contact the course organiser for details. If a course is postponed for any reason, you will be offered a place on the rescheduled course.
For live USA courses (not the on-line course) please contact Dr Amy Zalcman at:
2.4 Course Cancellation by the Organiser (VERY IMPORTANT)
The course has been running continuously for over 25 years and cancellations are rare (only on three occasions to date). In the unlikely event of a course cancellation please note that the presenters and course organisers (as defined in paragraph 1) are not responsible for reimbursing anything other than the registration fee (where applicable) or the deposit (where applicable). Course organisers are not responsible for the reimbursement of any additional costs incurred by delegates in connection to their attendance at the course (for example travel costs or accommodation costs). We therefore strongly advise delegates who are travelling to the host city and staying in the venue hotel (or elsewhere) to take out travel insurance to cover any lost expenditure in the event of a course cancellation. This is especially important if your travel costs are non-refundable.

We started collecting anonymous statistics about the USA course at the end of 2018. Since then, hundreds of course participants have each given us a score out of ten for the elements described below.
Our current level of satisfaction for the course as a whole is [feedback-F1]/100. This is the average participant rating for all of our most recent international courses
The scores for our latest USA course (data collected from [feedback-A63] respondents on [feedback-A59]) are shown below.
Incredible lecture series, and truthfully one of the most rewarding academic experiences in my adult life. The graphics are as astounding as the ease at which Dr. Talbot and Dr. Westbrook navigate the physics of MRI. Truly brilliant! Thank you.
Wow, the best MRI course ever!
The animation and lecturers are very informative and knowledgable in their field. The animations makes MRI physics easier to understand.
A lot of areas were put into words I could understand compared to just reading a book on MR physics.
Very good presentation & delivery! And very nice job relating MRI to real life with animations!! It solidified my knowledge in MRI.
This has been the best MR physics educational experience. I would attend the course annually and recommend it to everyone involved in MRI.
