Course Information

Course Information

MRI in Practice

The MRI in Practice course has been presented since 1992 and is the longest-running and probably the best-known course of its kind in the world. The course is presented by MRI in Practice authors Catherine Westbrook and John Talbot. Cathy and John are both qualified educators holding Masters degrees in MRI and are both Doctors of (medical) education. They have specialised in distance-learning via webinar for the last 15 years, having taught a Masters degree in MRI via distance-learning delivery. As such, they are ideally placed to offer the very highest quality educational experience in magnetic resonance imaging, both live and on-line.
Since its first publication in 1992 our book MRI in Practice has been the best-selling book in its field. This course is based on the book and will help you to grasp all of these important topics with ease. The new 5th edition has been completely redesigned to follow the course topics and combined with the high definition CGI graphics used in the course it will provide you with the best possible grounding for your CPD requirements or as an adjunct to academic study. If you are planning on attending the course we recommend purchasing the book as it essentially forms the "course notes" and will present you with all of the revision material you need once the course has ended.

The Course Content

The content is primarily aimed at radiographers/ MRI technologists who require CPD or are taking boards exams/academic courses. We also welcome veterinary practitioners, radiotherapy practitioners, physicians, radiologists, cardiologists and neurologists. The course features the same lecture-format as is presented in all of our other host countries and is therefore applicable to a multidisciplinary audience.

The online course format is exactly the same as the live course with streaming lectures each day and live Q&A and revision sessions. Each day covers an important theme:

• Day 01 - Fundamental Principles
• Day 02 - Pulse Sequences
• Day 03 - Spatial Encoding
• Day 04 - Image Quality

Because of the way CPD points are awarded, in North America, the days are available to purchase separately. Please note, for anyone relatively new to MRI, day 01 is absolutely essential viewing. Without a good grasp of the fundamental concepts covered on Day 01, it is unlikely that any of the other content will be fully understandable. The full programme is shown below and a detailed breakdown of the lecture topics can be found on the course information page. In the UK and Australasia, CPD endorsement/appellation is offered on a whole-course basis rather than by-the-day.

The Online Format

The online course uses a blend of HD streaming video and live webinar sessions.
After application we will send you a link that allows you to enrol on our members-only site www.mri-in-practice.com. When you have registered with that site, you will be able to access a course information page that explains how the course works and also allows you to test out your computer hardware to make sure you can access our streaming content. It is very important to do this as soon as possible before the course begins.

Rewind, Revisit, Revise

Live lectures tend to look suboptimal when presented from online conferencing software - jerky, wobbly laggy and entirely dependent on the host's internet connection. One short outage and everyone is left looking at a blank screen. We thought we could do better, and all of the participant feedback for the online course shows that we have. We put the entire course on Amazon's professional streaming servers! It was a huge undertaking that took nearly 8 months. We wrote over 100,000 words of narration, we made the equivalent of 12 feature-films worth of lecture video, complete with professional quality computer generated imagery and professional audio recording. The resulting lectures are like nothing we have presented before.
All of the streaming content is delivered synchronously - just like a live course - but with the added bonus of extra time built into the programme that will allow you to revisit, re-watch and revise any parts of the lectures that you wish to see again. This is a major advantage that can only be realised using online delivery and our participants really love it.
Importantly, your viewing experience doesn't rely on the host's internet connection.
The face-to-face sessions are delivered via Zoom webinar. We will send you all the necessary links shortly before the course begins.
If you are interested in how the course was developed from an educational perspective, there is a blog post here.

Radiotherapy and Oncology Professionals

The proliferation of new hybrid MRI/Linac machines has resulted in a big influx of radiotherapy professionals to our courses. We are the preferred education provider for both Elekta and Philips Medical Systems who make these machines, so be reassured you are choosing the right course with MRI in Practice Online!

Veterinary Practitioners

Veterinary practitioners need look no further than MRI in Practice. We have been running the MRI in Practice course exclusively for veterinary radiologists and radiographers in the USA since 2017. These courses are presented in collaboration with veterinary MRI radiologist Amy Zalcman, formerly presented at the University of Missouri and now on-line. Feedback shows that veterinary practitioners find this course extremely beneficial. Our course is now the go-to MRI course for veterinary practitioners in the USA and the UK. We also attract a large number of veterinary practitioners on our annual Sydney course in Australia.

International Availability

This course is run synchronously to UK (London) time, however we also welcome participants from the locations listed below. The table shows the course timings for each time zone. Note that the course is delivered in English.
Please do not apply for the course unless you are in one of the locations listed as the lectures may not be available in your country. If in doubt please contact ObscureMyEmail before registering or paying.

MRI in Practice Online: 4-Day Course

You can choose to attend the entire course (best value) but each day is themed - so you can mix and match the days you wish to attend. We strongly advise attending day 01 (Fundamentals) before attending any other days, or the content may not be as understandable.

You can find more details about the lecture content in our brochure.

Here is our themed programme, it contains all you need to know in just four days.

MRI in Practice 4 day Programme
  • Why are there no clinical sessions on the programme?

MRI in Practice is an MRI physics course using a non-mathematical conceptual approach. Some providers pad out their MRI courses with clinical sessions, here are the reasons why we do not

    • In our experience most employers prefer to train their staff in the clinical aspects of their role in the workplace using time-trusted hands-on learning.
    • Radiologists usually have their own preferences when it comes down to the choice of imaging plane, or the protocol used, this is unlikely to be the same as the method taught in a generic presentation.
    • Every scanner is different in terms of configuration, gradient speed, coil choice, pulse sequence availability and field-strength, there is no "one size fits all" clinical method.
    • In view of the above, we feel that to "teach" a generic clinical approach to neuro, cardiac, breast, MSK etc. that applies to every scanner, at every field-strength and to cover every angle is a tall order - and is highly likely be counter-productive when not tailored to your own local preferences.
    • For new installations or manufacturer-specific techniques you have a fantastic resource in your expert applications specialists.
    • Finally - time costs money so we feel that all of the above can be better covered in a book - which can be studied at leisure, read in your own workplace and can cover far more than a 60-minute lecture.

  • How the course works - click here for full details before you apply...

It is a fairly simple process, but if you would like a full explanation of what you need to do to apply and attend the course, read on.

Firstly - let's check to make sure you fulfil the basic requirements for attendance:

    1. Check that you live in one of the geographical areas listed below. If your country is not listed, this course is not available to you. There may be other courses that are more suited to your time zone - see course menu at the top of the page.
    2. The course requires you to have access to just 2 resources, a Zoom meeting and our eLearning portal at www.mri-in-practice.com. Zoom is used for live face-to-face sessions, our eLearning portal delivers the lecture content as HD streaming video.
    3. Ensure that you have a reasonably fast and stable internet connection and a PC, Mac, MacBook or Laptop to access the lectures. This must be in a domestic location, not a commercial premises, hospital or educational establishment. The lectures are not accessible from mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones.
    4. Your computer must have the latest version of one of the following browsers installed: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox. The lectures may not play in other browsers.
    5. You will also need a device that can access Zoom and is equipped with a webcam. This can be a smartphone or tablet, it does not need to be the device you use to watch the lectures.
    6. The organisers cannot be held responsible for local connection issues or equipment failure.

So far so good? Assuming you have the right equipment and reasonable broadband connection in your home…

    1. If you are ready to purchase a place on the course today, you may apply using the application form below. If you do not intend to pay today, please bookmark this page and come back when you are ready to make a payment. UK delegates (only) may request an invoice instead - please continue to complete the form today if required.
    2. When you have submitted the application form a payment page will open. Use our secure link to make payment via our payment partner Stripe. Please note that there are no refunds offered once payment has been made. You may, however exchange your place with another person, or attend the next available course (if applicable) if anything happens to prevent you attending the course you apply for.
    3. If someone else is paying on your behalf, please ensure that you let us know when the payment is made and by whom (email us at ObscureMyEmail), otherwise we will not be able to reconcile the payment with your application.
    4. You will receive a receipt from Stripe, please keep this as evidence of your having paid. This will be sent to the email address submitted to Stripe, if it doesn't appear to be delivered check your spam folder.

Congratulations - you are coming on the course….

    1. A few weeks before the course begins we will send you an invitation link to join the course at our eLearning portal www.mri-in-practice.com. This requires you to visit the website and fill in a short membership form.
    2. It takes one or two working days to approve your membership.
    3. As soon as your membership is approved you will be sent an email with a username and password for our exclusive members-only area at mri-in-practice.com. Make a note of these and keep them safe because you will need them to access the lectures. We ask you to log on to our members-only area as soon as possible because it gives you more information about the course and also provides a test video for you to play. It's important to do this because the test video is hosted on the same streaming server as the lectures. It will ensure that your browser, broadband and computer are capable of screening the videos.
    4. Because this is so important we require you to register and log into www.mri-in-practice.com well in advance of the course. Participants who do not join the course by the close of business on the day before the course begins will not be able to join the course or access the lectures. We will send you a reminder if needed.
    5. Shortly before the course begins we will send you a link to join the zoom meeting.

On the first day of the course….

    1. The programme runs in exactly the same way as the live course. You can see the timing in the course programme graphic above. It's important to note that the programme follows the time zone advertised. This means that participants in other time zones will need to adjust the timing accordingly. For example someone from Hong Kong can attend the UK course, but they will start the programme at 3:00pm rather than 8:00am and finish at midnight.
    2. On Day 01 we will ask you to log into Zoom using the link we provided. It is very important that you log into Zoom each day before the programme begins.
    3. When everyone has joined the Zoom meeting we will give you a link to access the streaming lectures at www.mri-in-practice. For this you just need the username and password for the members-only area as described above.
    4. For the best experience we recommend that you have the lectures streaming on your PC/Mac/laptop and Zoom open on a tablet or smartphone next to your PC. Alternatively you can use the same PC to stream the lectures and the Zoom meeting, however, on older machines this may use a lot of your system resources and cause lagging.

If the above sounds complicated - it really isn't. You just need those two resources and a decent computer set up - most of the conditions mentioned above will already be met if you have a modern PC and use one of the usual browsers. We have been running the online version of the course now for almost a year and the feedback to date has been incredibly positive. A significant majority of participants prefer the online course model to attending a live course. The electronic delivery system has attracted excellence scores of over 90% on average.

    Comments made by our participants…

    • "I liked the combination of zoom allowing interaction with the lecturers coupled with the high quality teaching videos. I think the videos work better than zoom lectures would. Also the revision quizzes were great, a helpful learning resource."

    • "First on line course I have done, I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy, but found it very well-run, informative and easy. Also great to be able to be at home rather than away for few days. Learned a lot and enjoyed doing it."

    • "The explanations and graphics were easy to follow and understand and the ability to access the material at one's own pace, rewind and repeat was great."

    • "I enjoyed the pre-recorded presentation format as it allowed me to repeat complicated sections and take notes. I would have previously said I preferred face-to-face however this format does not have a handy rewind function and you can often miss information on a face-to-face course."

    • "I've gained excellent knowledge through the course. It was taught and delivered excellently. I also liked the fact that it was interactive and 'face-to-face' via zoom, but we had control (compared to sitting in a class and waiting for a break)."

Our Terms & Conditions, Please Read Carefully Before Applying

1.0 The Course

1.1 The Course Organisers

The live MRI in Practice course is presented internationally in 22 countries and on-line. The presenters are Dr. Catherine Westbrook and Dr. John Talbot (hereafter identified as the
presenters).
In most cases the presenters are contracted to deliver the course by a local course organiser who administers the course, takes payments from delegates and is usually registered for VAT etc. In some cases the organiser may be a registered company involved in health, education or both.
All requests for information relating to the administration of the courses including payments, refunds etc should be directed to the relevant course organiser. This can be done by using the on-line info request forms relating to each course. These may be on third-party websites.

Courses held in the UK, the USA, Australia and the Netherlands are organised directly by www.mrieducation.com and all enquiries should be directed to ObscureMyEmail.

1.2 Course Content

The course materials are updated constantly, to keep pace with changes within the field of MRI and to take advantage of the latest presentation technology and as such the course content may vary over time. The programme provided on this web site and in our promotional materials is for guidance only and we reserve the right to alter the timing and running order of the lectures to meet the requirements of the individual organiser and the venue.

1.3 Intellectual Property and Copyright Issues

The names
MRI in Practice, and MRI in Practice / The Course are copyright 1992-present date Blackwell Science (Wiley Books) & Dr. Catherine Westbrook.
All text and graphics in this web site and in the course materials are copyright (2009-present date) Blackwell Science (Wiley Books) and Dr. John Talbot.

1.4 Audio and video recording of the live course content is strictly prohibited including (but not limited to) the use of mobile phones, iPods, iPads, tablet PCs, voice recorders, digital cameras and any type of computer. The presenters reserve the right to ask individual delegates to leave the lecture room in the event of them using any type of mobile electronic equipment including laptops. Lectures will not commence if there are any electronic devices in evidence at the beginning of each session. Mobile phones may be brought into the conference room, but must be switched off and stowed out of site during lectures. Charging of any devices in the lecture hall is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.

We operate regular checks with an electronic detection system to ensure that covert recording devices are not being used. This uses optical and radiofrequency scanning.

The presenters will pause presentations in the event that any portable electronic device appears to be in use during a presentation. We have had to introduce these rules following attempts to make illegal video copies of the course materials and they are strictly enforced.

1.5 On-line course protection against copyright theft

The online course uses geo-info software and digital fingerprinting that can be detected in the event that a video is recorded by any means. This content may be used as evidence to explicitly identify the person who captured the recording by date time and location. If such content gets into the public domain we always take legal action against the person responsible. Please do not attempt to record or share on-line content. Offenders will be prosecuted.
This includes screening the lectures to any third party. The on-line lectures are for individual rental as part of the course fee. Public screening, or screening in an institution such as a school, hospital or university IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE. Accessing the lectures from a hospital, educational establishment, commercial premises or public space is prohibited. There are no exceptions made to this rule. In such cases legal action will be taken against the institution in question and they will be banned from accessing any further courses.

1.5 Visa Applications for International Courses

www.mrieducation.com are unable to provide letters of invitation for visa applicants. This is because we are based in the UK and are therefore not in a position to sponsor or support visa applications in countries other than the UK.

2.0 Fees and Payments

2.1 Course Pricing

Course pricing may vary by country and by venue and is set by the individual organisers (as defined in section 1.1). This will reflect the venue cost, the level of sponsorship and transport costs.
MRI in Practice (The Book) may be offered inclusive of the course fee in certain venues. Please check with the course organiser at the time of application. The course fee NEVER includes accommodation or travel.

2.2 Payments

For your peace of mind, all payments processed directly from www.mrieducation.com are arranged through Stripe. Stripe provide a secure, fraud-protected, banking infrastructure for on-line payments. Stripe payments may not be available from your international location. We currently do not accept payment via any other method. If you are being sponsored by your employer you will need to claim back your payment directly from them.

2.3 Refunds

There are no refunds offered under any circumstances for any of our courses that use Stripe payment options.

DO NOT APPLY OR PAY FOR ONLINE COURSES UNLESS YOUR HOME ADDRESS IS IN THE COUNTRY FOR WHICH THE COURSE IS INTENDED. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE MATERIALS AND YOU WILL NOT BE REIMBURSED.

For all other courses, please contact the course organiser for details. If a course is postponed for any reason, you will be offered a place on the rescheduled course.

For live USA courses (not the on-line course) please contact Dr Amy Zalcman at:

2.4 Course Cancellation by the Organiser (VERY IMPORTANT)

The course has been running continuously for over 25 years and cancellations are rare (only on three occasions to date). In the unlikely event of a course cancellation please note that the presenters and course organisers (as defined in paragraph 1) are not responsible for reimbursing anything other than the registration fee (where applicable) or the deposit (where applicable). Course organisers are not responsible for the reimbursement of any additional costs incurred by delegates in connection to their attendance at the course (for example travel costs or accommodation costs). We therefore strongly advise delegates who are travelling to the host city and staying in the venue hotel (or elsewhere) to take out travel insurance to cover any lost expenditure in the event of a course cancellation. This is especially important if your travel costs are non-refundable.

  • Incredible lecture series, and truthfully one of the most rewarding academic experiences in my adult life. The graphics are as astounding as the ease at which Dr. Talbot and Dr. Westbrook navigate the physics of MRI. Truly brilliant! Thank you.

  • Wow, the best MRI course ever!

  • This course was extremely detailed and the presenters were exceptionally knowledgeable. The analogies used to explain difficult concepts were one of the most helpful portions of these lectures and really increased my understanding of MRI physics. Would 100% recommend this course to others.

  • This has been the best MR physics educational experience. I would attend the course annually and recommend it to everyone involved in MRI.

Fantastic job making the content easy to visualize and conceptualize! Well organized, great coverage of important topics.

  • Very good presentation & delivery! And very nice job relating MRI to real life with animations!! It solidified my knowledge in MRI.

  • Loved the animations. It is apparent how much time and passion was put into the course. I feel lucky to have been able to attend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!

  • Visual animations were amazing!!! I can't say enough about those for visual learners.

  • The amount of knowledge in one (Zoom) room here was incredible. And it is clear Cathy and John have much training and skill in educating from their organization of the content and break down of difficult concepts
