Why Choose MRI in Practice the Course ?

We are very aware that you have a choice when it comes to CPD and MRI training. If you are a manager, you will want to make a clear evidence-based decision on which course can get your new staff up-to-speed with MRI within your training budget. If you are a radiographer, looking to fulfil CPD requirements, or wish to learn the underpinning principles of MRI in a format that is applied to your day-to-day work, then please consider the following points.
We invite you to scrutinise our credentials and compare them to any other course available because we are confident that our course ticks all the boxes.

The Course:

We have a rock-solid foundation, our 20-year legacy leaves the competition standing, running continuously since our early days at Oxford, MRI in Practice - The Course has been THE market leader in MRI education since 1992 and is currently presented in 16 countries across 5 continents.
In addition to our UK courses, we have presented in mainland Europe two or three times a year since 2005, Australia annually since 2004 and our first American courses were over ten years ago.
Our sell-out courses engage and educate hundreds of delegates per year, and their feedback sheets consistently rate our lectures as excellent. Unlike many other MRI courses, MRI in Practice is completely independent of any private company or institution. This is most important, because we can guarantee that our delivery is unbiased and we are free to say what we want to say.

In the UK, any profits made by the course, go to the good causes of our partner-charity Cobalt UK, including the funding of medical research - not into the coffers of a private "learning" company.

The Content:

Here is our four-day programme:

prog550

The USA registry review version of the programme is over three days and can be found on the USA course page.

In the UK we offer a three-tier approach allowing delegates to pick from a two-day basic course, a two-day intermediate course or a three-day advanced course, details can be found on the UK course page.

MRI in Practice - The Course is based on the the World’s best selling MRI book. MRI in Practice, now in its 4th major edition, is consistently at the top of its league on Amazon.com and attracts a perfect five stars from public reviews. It outsells its next closest rival (Handbook of MRI Technique) many times over (in case you wondered - that book is also one of ours).
MRI in Practice is famed as the reference text for practitioners taking the US registry exam - so you can rest assured that our course content is tried, trusted and relevant. You don’t have to take our word for it - our course has been accredited/endorsed by:

  • The UK College of Radiographers (CPD NOW),
  • The British Institute of Radiology,
  • Trinity College Dublin,
  • The Australian Institute of Radiology,
  • The European Federation of Radiographic Societies (EFRS)
  • The Institute for Professional Development of Physicians in Sweden
  • The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists
  • The Society of Radiological Technicians and Nuclear Medicine Technicians of Serbia.
  • The University of Sharjah (Emirates),
  • The University of Malta
  • The Romanian Radiology Society/College of Physicians,
  • The Romanian Society of MRI Radiologists
  • The American Society of Radiologic Technologists
  • The Qatar Health Congress
  • The National Guard of Saudi Arabia

we do not believe that any other MRI course in the World has so many affiliations, and we are very proud to have the support and accreditation from these institutions.

The Presentation:

MRI in Practice - The Course has evolved over the years, always taking advantage of the very latest technology. We were using data projection before anyone else (as long ago as 1997), and our computer graphics have also developed in line with broadcast production values. Having taken advice from experts in the cinema and TV industries, the latest version of the course utilises over 300 computer generated imagery models, rendered into photo-realistic HD. The lectures are screened using state-of-the-art presentation software and hardware over a bright, sharp data-projector. Delegates repeatedly tell us that our 3D imagery brings difficult concepts to life in a way that a conventional book can never achieve - but to give you the best of both worlds, many of our organisers include a free copy of MRI in Practice as your "course notes".

The Presenters:

Some courses rely on the good-will of amateur external speakers - often having no qualifications in learning & teaching.
MRI in Practice is always presented by authors Catherine Westbrook and John Talbot - both fully-qualified educators and senior lecturers at post graduate level.
We firmly believe that radiographers should be taught by radiographers; it seems obvious, we speak the same language, and can apply the basic principles to the real world of scanning and patient care.
Of course, the presenters must know their subject, Cathy and John are both clinical MRI specialists, and are not only educated in MRI to masters level, but also supervise post-graduate students who are taking Masters degrees in MRI.
It doesn’t stop there. We also believe that credible course presenters should be qualified in teaching and learning - after all that is what they do! As academics, Cathy and John have post-graduate qualifications in teaching and learning, and are both Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. The HEA vision is for students in UK higher education to enjoy the highest quality learning experience in the world and we bring that philosophy to everything we do - including MRI in Practice - The Course.

If you are trying to decide between MRI in Practice and a course offered by a private consultancy or "learning company" check that the company owner and faculty have the necessary academic qualifications to be offering such courses. In our experience there are consultancies charging high fees for courses - but who have no formal qualifications to be offering educational products or services. Always ask if they have a recognised qualification in Learning and Teaching and make sure that they are affiliated to a body such as the Higher Education Academy. If they are a credible education provider they will be happy to show certification to prove this.

John Talbot MSc DCRR PgC (L&T) FHEA

John is a senior lecturer in medical imaging at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. He was formerly Education and Research Radiographer at Oxford MRI/Oxford University. He developed an early interest in MRI as a school-leaver in 1977, and was one of the first radiographers in the world to gain an MSc in the field of medical imaging (MRI) in 1997.

He now lectures extensively around the World as co-presenter of MRI in Practice | The Course, and also the new Oxford MRI Course which has rapidly gained a well-deserved reputation as being one of the best MRI courses for Radiologists in the UK.

Academically, John is a contributor to undergraduate and postgraduate MRI courses at Anglia Ruskin University. He is a senior lecturer in post-graduate MRI, supervising Masters students dissertations on this pathway.

In publishing, John is co-author and illustrator of the fourth edition of “MRI in Practice” (Blackwell/Wiley), the new 3rd edition of the "Handbook of MRI Technique" (Blackwell/Wiley) and co-author of “Medical Imaging- Techniques, Reflection & Evaluation” (Elsevier).

John's main interest is exploiting the parallelism between technology and learning and he is currently working on new concepts in the field of virtual learning environments, including the construction of an MRI scanner for (e.g) Second Life (WIP). More recently John has been creating computer generated high definition movies and anaglyph 3D diagrams of MRI concepts for the all-new update of MRI in Practice | The Course. Some of these CGI resources are included in MRI in Practice - The App, available from the iTunes store from spring 2012.
